SCOTLAND'S transport minister is being pressed for action on the traffic chaos which blighted Bank Holiday weekend.
As gridlock took hold in Largs it took over two hours for people to reach Cumbrae and on the Monday the situation was so bad Cal Mac recommended people leave the island early to avoid congestion later in the day.
Residents want the authorities to take steps to deal with the massive increase in cars heading for the island.
Andrew Smillie took to Twitter to press minister Humza Yousaf, saying: "I’ve been here 15 years now and this is the worst it’s ever been.
"We badly need a car park and dedicated ferry/road wardens at peak times."
Austen Currie lobbied Cal Mac, posting: "I think Cal Mac have take a look at what happened...something has to change.
"No-one should wait two hours to get here."
Since the road equivalent tariff regime was introduced, ferry traffic has soared.
The travel chaos on the holiday weekend was compounded by MV Loch Riddon being restricted to sailing in winds of less than 20 knots due to damage to her life raft crane.
Statistics for the Bank Holiday weekend were described as 'record-breaking' by Cal Mac.
On Friday May 25 there were 5,780 passengers and 892 cars.
The following day 6,420 passengers made the crossing, with 762 cars, and on Sunday the figures were 7,562 and 1,017.
On Monday May 28 there were 9,159 passengers 1,035 cars.
CalMac sailed after hours on both Sunday and Monday to clear passengers and cars from the island.
