THE end of era was signalled as bulldozers moved in to knock down two schools which closed earlier this year.
Both Largs Academy and Kelburn Primary are being flattened to make way for new housing.
The site is set for 122 houses, include 28 sheltered housing units, 18 amenity houses, 22 units aimed at those with special needs and 54 general council houses.
There will also be a new resource centre to provide support to older people living in the sheltered and amenity houses and dedicated space for staff working with those with special needs.
All of the properties will be built to modern standards and they will include solar panels.
There will also be a district heating system built into to the site to provide regular and cheaper heating to the new properties.
The 122 new properties in Largs will help ease one of the most highly-pressured housing markets in Ayrshire and provide a wide range of accommodation to meet different needs. This includes wheelchair-liveable properties, amenity bungalows, supported accommodation, sheltered housing and general needs homes.
A sheltered housing complex with a community hub will also be developed as part of the project.
The new development is not expected to be fully open until 2021.
Meanwhile a police probe is taking place into blazes at another other closed school in Largs - the former Brisbane Primary.
It was recently the scene of two Scottish Fire and Rescue call-outs during the same weekend.
This school is also expected to be demolished for a new development, but North Ayrshire Council are still to announce finalised future plans for the site.
