Largs Firefighters tackled a wildfire for over two hours on Monday night.

A hillwalker discovered trees on fire on the hills behind Fairlie, alerting the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service at 7.54pm on July 9.

A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Operations Control mobilised one fire engine to the scene, near the A78 at Fairlie, where Firefighters extinguished the flames.

“There were no casualties and crews left at 10.38pm after ensuring the area was made safe.”

The fire is said to have been deliberate, with Largs fire station asking that people be aware that wildfires can cause serious damage especially with ground conditions being so dry.

The department later responded to a call at 9.17pm on Monday July 9 of a similar nature, with trees on fire in Largs.

One fire engine was sent to the scene at Castlepark Drive where firefighters extinguished the flames, with crews leaving the area at 9.49pm.

With the good weather continuing, wildfire warnings remain in place.

SFRS Area Manager Bruce Farquharson and Chair of the Scottish Wildfire Forum has issued a warning.

He said: “We have seen in recent weeks just how large these fires can become - many rural and remote communities are hugely impacted by these incidents, which can cause significant environmental and economic damage.

"Livestock, farmland, wildlife, protected woodland and sites of special scientific interest can all be devastated by these fires - as can the lives of people living and working in rural communities.

“We are appealing to people to take great care – it is crucial that people act safely and responsibly in rural environments and follow the countryside code.

"Just one heat source like a campfire ember can cause it to ignite and if the wind changes direction even the smallest fire can spread uncontrollably and devastate entire hillsides."
