A Largs man is in peak condition as he prepares to climb three mountains in 24 hours in aid of Diabetes UK.

After years of watching his two sisters suffer with diabetes, Euan McKay, will complete the 3 peaks challenge on August 25 to show them his support for them.

He says that having watched them deal with the life altering condition, he wants to put himself through a small amount of pain that they deal with every day.

The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing each of the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales, with the total climbing distance covering 24miles with an ascent of over 10 thousand feet.

The challenge takes in Snowdon, Scafell Peak and the highest of the three Ben Nevis.

Euan hopes that his efforts will encourage people to think about the severity of the condition.

He said: “A lot of people think that Type 1 diabetes is easily controlled and that it is not a major problem, but it is.

“I have watched my sisters have serious issues in trying to live their normal life because of the condition.

“One particular incident that was hard for us all, was when one of my sisters was out a walk in the country side and she collapsed.

“It was just lucky that someone happened to drive by and help her, or none of us would have had any idea.

“It’s important that people know how serious it is, even something as simple as a night out is a bigger effort for them.

“My older sister Rhona was diagnosed when she was 10, whilst my younger sister Eilidh wasn’t diagnosed until she was 23.

He added: “I figured it is the least I can do, and it will be easy compared to all of the diabetics in the world who have to perform injections at least 4 times a day

“I hope that raising awareness and sharing about my sisters lets others with diabetes know that even though there are difficulties that they can live a normal life.

“Whilst the condition required them to have c-sections to have their kids they have happy and healthy families and are truly and inspiration to me.”

Euan tries to complete a challenge every two years to show his support, having previously ran a half marathon and also a 10-thousand-foot sky dive.

He added: “My sisters have really been incredible, and I am proud of them and want to do something to show them that, so they can hopefully be proud of me.

He added: “My mum, dad and oldest sister are coming to meet me in Wales and I told them that I will be at the bottom by 7am on the Sunday so I just hope I really can do it in the time limit and they aren’t waiting about for me .”

The hike will start in Scotland at 7am on the Saturday with times goals set if participants want to complete the challenge in the 24-hour period.

Buses then run the participants to Scotland for the second peak and then finally to Wales where they will have to climb in the darkness.
