IT was very much a 'par-fect day' for a local youngster as he picked up some top tips from a golfing legend at the world-famous St Andrews.

Freddie Smith enjoyed a once in a lifetime experience after he sealed a place on the Highland Spring Junior Masterclass on the Old Course.

Freddie was one of 10 lucky winners who received one-to-one tuition with one of the world’s most well known golfers - two times Masters green jacket winner and Ryder Cup veteran, Bernhard Langer, on the practice ground of this year’s Senior Open.

The young golfers, all aged 10-16, were given goodie bags, then had a short warm up and received some useful tips before it was time to step up and show what they could do.

Having had a golf club in his hand since he was a toddler, Freddie was delighted to get a 'perfect!' comment from the golfing great from Germany when he produced one long drive after another.

Bernhard also encouraged him to keep on practising his golf and enjoying the game.

Afterwards Bernhard spent time signing autographs and chatting with the young winners and their families, resulting in a 'truly unforgettable day' for the local lad.
