Due to volume of traffic, the wait time in the vehicle queue from Largs to Cumbrae is approximately one hour.
The problem has emerged as only one ferry is currently operating the service, at the start of the busy Millport September Weekend festivities.
Cal Mac have been asked about getting a second ferry online today but responded: "Sorry for the inconvenience. Unfortunately due to the limited resources currently available it's not possible today.
"The MV Loch Riddon will be assisting on the Largs-Cumbrae service, where required, from Saturday afternoon."
An extended late night service takes place on Saturday evening, but users need to pre-book at the Largs ferry terminal.
Additional sailings will depart Cumbrae at 2100, 2130 & 2200 on Saturday.
