Editor's honeymoon in the snow

I know it is the poetic season of Rabbie Burns but I had to look twice when a letter came in from a Mr Tennyson
Whether he is a relation of the late, great Lord Alfred I am not sure but Mr Bernard K Tennyson of John Street, Largs wrote to say our recent Know Your News article on the great snow of 1940 was very interesting.rnHe tells me: "I was 16 years old, just left school and lived in Largs."
But one of the details that was not reported in Calum Corral's research was that John McCreadie whom I succeeded as editor in 1974 was married in the winter of the Largs snowdrifts.
Mr McCreadie who was a roving reporter for the 'News' 70 years ago was married at St Mary's RC Church and a reception was held at the Victoria Hotel in Largs.
Mr Tennyson informs me that there was a problem because Mr McCreadie and his bride had to make their way to Wemyss Bay station in order to set off on their honeymoon as the Largs to Glasgow line was completely blocked for weeks.
Funnily enough, in tandem with the article about snowbound Largs and district, we carried a black and white film of the events on our website at www.largsandmillportnews.com (it should still be there).
Lo and behold the film loaned to us by Minnie Findlay showed Mr McCreadie setting off for the church on a horse-drawn carriage whilst being pelted by snowballs from admirers. Mr Tennyson said: "They were taken to the honeymoon train by sledge, a horse drawn one. Very resourceful, don't you think?"
I must agree, Bernard, but then editors of the 'News' are known to be resourceful.rnps At Largs Halkshill Bowling Club Burns Supper on Saturday vice-president Ian Bryson amused the audience by saying, in his vote of thanks, that my performance of Tam O' Shanter took longer than reading the Largs & Millport Weekly News!
"And how I glowered, amazed and curious."
Spiritual thought for the week: It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
