North Ayrshire Provost Bobby Rae is recovering well after suffering a stroke last week but hopes to return to business before the end of the year.

The 71 year old has been carrying out the main civic duties in North Ayrshire since 2007 but had to be taken to Inverclyde Hospital last Thursday after collapsing at home in Largs.

The good news is that doctors say that the local SNP councillor is making a speedy recovery.

His wife Joan spoke to the 'News' about his current progress. She said: "The stroke has affected his left leg but the power is coming back and Doctors are hopeful he will make a full recovery. He was taken to Inverclyde Hospital and is based in the Larkfield Unit. I think he might be in there for another two weeks. He told me to tell the Chief Exeuctive Elma Murray that he will be back in office a week on Monday. I think that might be a bit optimistic but he should be back soon.
