Largs town centre closed off

There will be no direct traffic through the main street for almost 24 hours in Largs this weekend.

Amey road contractors who are involved in the Largs town centre traffic plan have decided that the A78 trunk road between Aitken Street and Gogo Road, near the Morrison's roundabout will be shut to vehicles from 6.30pm on Saturday to 4.30pm on Sunday.

While road workers relay the Main Street up to 10.30pm on Saturday, returning to work at 9am on Sunday a diversion will be created via Bath Street, and Charles Street in both directions.

Amey personnel would be going round the town centre businesses giving details of the disruption.

At all other times there will be traffic lights and a convoy system in operation between Gogo Road and Largs Pier.

I have just read the article regarding roadworks on Largs Main Street. Tha men working on the road did not finish at 10:30pm on Saturday night they actually finished work in the early hours of the morning and returned to start again at 8am on the Sunday not 9am as stated in your article. I live in Aitken Street and I am still waiting for a full nights sleep after having to endure the noise from Saturday night and again at 12:45am this morning when the workers decided to remove the traffic cones from outside my home by dragging them across the street and throwing them into their truck. I wasn't notified that this work would be taking place at this time of night, and I don't know why it was allowed. They didn't allow digging up the street during the night when they wanted to do it at the ferry port a few months ago.

Looking at the post above, while I appreciate that those who live within the immediate vicinity of the Main Street may have experienced additional noise at night due to the late and early hours of work; it also seems like a slightly selfish point to make. Having waiting in traffic queues all weekend - that no doubt inconvenienced the entire town - I think it has been a much better solution to attack these works in an intesive and quick way rather than doing fewer hours per day making residents of the town having to put up with months of disruption.

I also live on Aitken Street,,, Just as long as they get the job done right the first time instead of setting up new road-works again & again, that will really make a mess of things (but they really should let nearby residents get their sleep, i.e. NO pneumatics after 9pm !!!)

Hopefully they are VERY considerate in the way they are laying the road, to serve us all well for years to come.
