Largs needs multi-storey car park

Comments (5) | Print | Email

The modest reduction in the number of parking spaces in the town is not going to influence the number of visitors. To say so is just sour-grapes from locals who have, for years, been allowed free-rein to park selfishly and dangerously in our town.

The laws on parking were long overdue for enforcement. Even in mid winter, most parking spaces were used, along with most of the yellow lines and various bits of pavement, and not a visitor to be seen within 20 miles!

Visitors, on the other hand, tend to fill up all of the south-side streets, and are, thus, relatively unaffected by town centre improvements - other than the few who do the decent thing and pay to park on the front, and, unfortunately, they now have to queue in the offside lane, since some lunatic put the bus stop on the front (anyone with half a brain knows where it should be sited). This effectively closes the northbound A78 to through traffic.

Mr Perman has counted empty car park spaces on a busy Sunday. No surprise there, I have to say. Locals all at home, and visitors all in Charles Street, John Street, May Street and the sea front, with a few closing the A78 attempting to access the car park.

At risk of being a bore, I once again must advocate the erection of a multi-storey, and provision of resident parking in the southside and appropriate town centre streets. A bitter pill to swallow, but the only real solution.

Totally agree. As a resident of the south side, I'm sick of visitors parking outside my house making me have to park miles away.

about parking i agree largs needs to do something about the parking as a day visitor you drive about looking for a parking space. we sat in a queue at the shore front go in and no spaces there was another six cars in front of us in the park to get back out we had to pay two pounds which i thought was a rip of as we could not get a parking space there was a phone number which we could phone which i did and it was north ayrshire council repairs so it cost me to phone the number on my mobile which did not help as i had to pay the money to get out or spend the day waiting for a space as i said we were there for the day so what a waste of time that would be also my wife is disabled and there is not enough spaces for disabled parking i would thing twice about visiting again.

Iv'e never heard so much rubbish in my life, I, my family and about three generations of our family that STILL live in Largs drive occasionally into town due to the fact we have failing health and NO other reason. If you need something down town I suggest you WALK and get of you backside. Even though I have difficulty walking but as yet have not signed up for a disability badge I ALWAYS find somewhere to park and anyone suggesting otherwise is a buffoon.Largs is a quaint seaside resort and not the Metropolis some would have it, so if you want the hustle and bustle with overflowing and overpriced car parks, parking attendants etc, head back from whence you came and leave the locals to worry about more important things.

John, you obviously have never been in the town centre on a hot bank holiday when it'll take at least 30mins to get from one end of the town to the other. The main thing is to stop visitors clogging up the residential streets. This is the most annoying thing. If you live in the southside of the town you can never get parked outside your own house. The only people that don't get this are the people that have driveways. I'm all right Jack attitude. As far as Ian, in the previous comment, £2 is pretty cheap compared to anywhere else you may go. Going for a day trip and you don't want to pay £2. What did you say to the chippy when you bought that fish supper. £4, I'm not paying that it's a rip off.

Two small car parks is not enough for the hundreds of people that flock to Largs for an ice cream and a chippy, with a chance of seeing the big yin or the doctor. Multi-storey all the way. Stop the visitors clogging up the small residential streets.

As a twice visiting tourist of Largs, parking is a frustrating situation at best. We have come from USA, Texas to be specific and love your lovely town. I understand what the residents are saying. Trust me, we as visitors don't want to park in front of your homes. We ourselves respect the residents of Largs. Tho I realize some don't care whose parking area they are using! A multi-story parking garage surely would be a good alternative to what goes on now. It would be a win-win solution all around!

Considering all that Largs offers to tourists, having extra parking would perhaps change some minds of residents towards the tourists. We have been there during the Viking festival and know all too well what the streets look like with the extra cars and traffic flow. I hope a solution can be agreed with by all concerned so your lovely town can still be on tourists list of places to visit while in Scotland.
