The 'News' has alerted Environmental Health at North Ayrshire Council to a 'vile' odorous smell to the south of Fairlie.
Motorists on the A78 travelling south of the Clydeport roundabout have reported the 'stench', and the matter was also raised at the village community council on Monday.
Villagers including Iain Hunter, Steve Graham, and two of the police who attended the meeting also reported smelling the odour.
The Largs and Millport News also received complaints about the strange smell.
Joanne Clezy said: "Can anyone shed light on the awful smell that invades my car every time I get to the other side of the Hunterston roundabout?
"It's absolutely awful, that's been about a week now. Other folks must have smelled it too. My daughter had her nose up against the air freshener to escape it last night as I didn't close the vents in time. It is vile."

The strong smell was again prevalent on Thursday evening of this week when passing by the location in cars.
A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “Although we have not received any complaints about this matter, our Environmental Health Team will carry out an investigation as a result of the Largs News enquiry.
“Our Environmental Health Team can deal with statutory nuisances such as these under the Environmental Protection Act.”
