At the recent Ayrwaves International Camp at Eglinton, Kathryn Burton of Fairlie was presented with her Queen’s Guide Award.

The Queen’s Guide Award is the highest award in Girlguiding and Kathryn is the first recipient in Largs for well over 50 years. It was presented to Kathryn by the Scottish Chief Commissioner of Girlguiding, Sue Walker.

On receiving her award Kathryn thanked everyone who helped her on her journey which has taken three years and has seen her develop a range of new skills including learning Mandarin while teaching in China with Project Trust.

Kathryn is currently studying chemical engineering at St Andrew’s University but is still active in Guiding, most recently as a key member of the media team at the international camp. On receiving her award she said, “Guiding has so much to offer girls and women of all ages, from life and leadership skills to the chance to travel the world, but above all have fun!”

Local units are always looking for new volunteers and if this sounds interesting there is an open event at Sainsbury’s in Irvine on Wednesday August 23 from 7.15pm where people can find out more about the opportunities available.
