Two Largs Academy pupils in their final year who are close friends were the joint winners of the Margaret Currie young citizen of the year award.
Every year the Margaret Currie Award is presented to a young person in Fairlie who has shown a commitment to helping others in the community, in addition to fulfilling their own potential in personal ways.
This first recipient Mhairi Galbraith. Through her interests in netball and hockey Mhairi has participated in coaching courses and currently coaches netball at Fairlie Primary School. In the community she helps with the local Fair Trade initiative and volunteers at the Sunday School every week.
The second recipient Emma Hewlett is a prefect and Buddy, participating in paired tutoring for youngsters further down the school who have additional support needs. She is on the school's Enterprise Committee, which does fundraising for the school.
Fairlie council chairman David Telford, who presented the award, said: "Every year there has been a worthy recipient and this year is no different, although in one important respect it is. This year there were two nominations, which were both so strong that it became impossible to select only one, and so this year there is a joint presentation to two worthy youngsters who happen to be close friends."
