"We need Fairlie bypass"
Calls have been made for the Fairlie bypass to be re-instated after another accident on the A78 Main Road.
Fairlie woman Ginette MacLean, who has herself been involved in an accident on the Main Road in Fairlie several years ago, told community councillors that action needed to be taken on the bad stretch of road.
It is the second accident to happen at the Causeway junction in the past year, and Mrs MacLean believes there is a danger that a more serious accident could take place and a loss of life.
In early January, a car collided with a delivery van in a narrow stretch of Fairlie's Main Road but nobody was injured. A Comet van was delivering to a house with its hazard lights flashing as a car attempted to overtake but a collision took place.
A Vauxhall Corsa vehicle being driven south by a 59 year old female then collided with the Toyota. No one was injured as a result of the accident.
During January 2009, another car collision resulted in the side wall to Mrs MacLean's property being damaged during another collision along the narrow stretch of road.
Upon speaking out on the situation at the recent Fairlie Community Council meeting, Mr John Riddell stated that the Fairlie bypass line has been taken off the Scottish government list of projects a few years ago.
Ginette, who once suffered a broken pelvis on a scooter coming out of the Causeway, said: "We have been waiting for a Fairlie bypass for 40-50 years. Why is it not on the list? Because the bedroom is to the front of our house, I worry about if it is a bad night, if an accident did occur, our bedrooms are to the front of the building and we would be at greater risk. The lorries tend to go a bit faster at night when nobody is about."

Report comment"There can be no argument that the choke point in the A78 at the Causeway junction is a major safety hazard but this risk could be substantially reduced in the short term if traffic speed could be controlled more effectively over the whole of the 30mph controlled zone within Fairlie.
There is now a new generation of Average Speed Cameras which operate wirelesly and thus are more economic to install. They would provide effective speed control throughout the day for the whole length of the Main Road.
Slower, controlled, traffic over this section of the A78 would also substantilly reduce noise which forms a considerable nuisance at 5am when it would appear the preferred time for Hunterston trucks to rattle empty through the village!"
