Church come out against Coal Power
'How does God intend to keep the lights on?' was the question asked at a recent Fairlie meeting after the Church of Scotland came out against the launch of a coal power station at Hunterston.
The issue was discussed during a recent Fairlie Community Council after the Reverend Ian Galloway, convener of the Kirk's Church and Society Church, said he was 'shocked;' to see power station proposals by Ayrshire Power for Hunterston.
Mr Galloway believes that if the government were to approve the controversial £2 billion plant in the local area, it would go against their pledge to fight climate change.
He said: "The Church of Scotland strongly supports the Scottish Government's plan to cut the emission of greenhouse gases in Scotland by 80% by 2050. However the proposed power station could increase the country's emission of carbon dioxide by 10%,
"This would make the Scottish Government target difficult if not impossible to achieve."
The Reverend argued that climate change is an ethical issue for the Church of Scotland. He said: "We see the damage being caused elsewhere in the world and the resulting poverty. Eco-Congregations across Scotland are taking a lead by starting to measure and reduce their own carbon footprints. It is therefore disheartening to see these proposals undermining our collective efforts to reduce Scotland's carbon footprint."

Report commentNo wonder the Church of Scotland's pews are virtually empty. They'll soon be able to close all the Churches and that will save numpties like the Reverend from ANY carbon emissions.
Even before I left for Canada the well-meaning softie liberals had given up on God, and turned the Kirk into a social workers' drop-in centre. Obviously things have just continued to get worse. Whoever is last out of Scotland, please turn the lights off (to save CO2 of course!).

Report commentHunterston coal power station is not needed. Several reports, including a recent report for the Scottish Government, confirm this. The owners of Peterhead power station have recently reduced its maximum output. According to National Grid, "It was always expected that some older generation would close in response to the margin of spare generation over peak demand having increased to its highest ever level..."

Report commentInteresting comment Hazelkaye. Perhaps Wotherspoons could purchase the church, then the people could go there in the evening after the "blazing sun" has gone down, At least they would be "Fairly" cozy.
