Local councillor Alan Hill has said that the success of the recent World Cup pub in Fairlie shows there is a clear market for a permanent bar in the village.
The asking price for the Mudhook bar/restaurant has apparently been dropped as fears are growing that it could be converted into housing.
The local pub has been closed since October 2008, but a newly formed Fairlie Sports Club held a fundraising bar at the Village Hall during the opening week of the World Cup to raise funds for an all weather sports surface in the swing park, and it proved a success.
The week long licence included a pub quiz and screenings of several World Cup matches including two England matches using a large projector with pies and various classic ales at reasonable prices.
Speaking to Fairlie Community Council, Alan Hill said that the pub raised approximately £1400 towards an all weather sports surface in the village, and a further £250 from a stall at the Fairlie Community Garden Open Day.
He commented: "The bar did reasonably well and it was standing room space only during the England matches. It was also mobbed for the quiz night on Wednesday evening. Anybody who is thinking about buying the Mudhook would have been impressed with the clientele if they had gone to any of these nights."
Cllr. Hill has already spoken about repeating the bar event for other functions throughout the year and also revealed that this year's Fairlie Gala event which takes place on August 19-21 will also raise funds for the new all weather facility at the local swing park and could be used for football, tennis and basketball.
