A Peugeot car has crashed into a wall on Fairlie’s main road on Tuesday afternoon, leading to renewed calls for a 20mph limit from a prominent roads campaigner.

The incident happened at approximately 3.10pm when a car apparently struck a temporary traffic light, before going through a garden wall on the opposite side of the road, next to a new social housing development.

David Telford, who is a community councillor, heard the crash as he was walking down the School Brae, and said: “The lollipop lady had just been standing there, and this car was coming along, hit the temporary traffic lights and lost control, before going through the wall opposite next to the new housing.

“People had come out of their shops when the accident happened. The woman who was driving the car had disappeared to make a phone call but she wasn’t hurt.” Irrespective of the cause, Mr Telford feels that there needs to be a 20mph limit following the incident.

He said: “I think what was particularly shocking is the time of day that it happened - my god, there could have been kids there or anyone walking along that pavement. We keep hearing that Fairlie doesn’t deserve to get a 20mph limit from the Scottish Government and transport authorities as accidents never happen in Fairlie, that is what we are told. It is more grist to the mill for the 20mph campaign.” A police spokesman said: “We were called at 3.10pm on Tuesday afternoon to a report of one vehicle road crash on Main Road in Fairlie, there are no reports of any injuries. The police did attend but there is no further police action.”
