At least 10 fire engines tackled a large blaze at the Hunterston coal terminal.

Large plumes of black smoke were seen emanating from the jetty at around 10am, and continued to billow across Fairlie bay for up to two and a half hours afterwards.

Flames could also be seen, while there were some loud clattering noises which were heard from the beach.

A helicopter was also seen flying over the scene during the blaze within the past hour.

Scottish Fire and Rescue have confirmed that there were no injuries.

Crews were faced with a well developed fire within a ship loader and conveyor system used for loading coal from the terminal, The Incident Commander immediately requested additional appliances from Dalry and Dreghon Community Fire Stations to assist in dealing with the incident.

During the operation crews had to be withdrawn to a safe distance as a precautionary measure due to the partial collapse of a section of the machinery.

Further resources including a firefighting tug, a high reach appliance and ground monitors were also deployed.

Firefighting operations are ongoing but the fire has now been contained.
