The Fairlie Great War exhibition has been praised for its concise information presented about every villager who fought in the Great War.

The Community Association decided to build up a profile of all the soldiers who took part in the 1914-18 conflict, and as well as hosting an exhibition, they have published a booklet, and set up a website - www.fairliesmenofthegreatwar.co.uk Lord Glasgow officially opened the exhibition at the Village Hall, and said: “It is a marvellous enterprise. I think it is a very important thing that we commemorate those who have fought in the first world war, and particularly those who died, and I would like to congratulate all at the Community Association who have been involved in this. I have provided some information about my own family for the exhibition.” Fairlie historian John Riddell said: “The Community Association have done a fantastic amount of work, got the grant from Heritage Lottery and researched all the names on the war memorial, and the plaque in the Village Hall, so hours and hours of work has gone into this, including involving the local school, and showing people how to research the local ancestry, and the results are excellent.

“Each year we go out to the war memorial on Armistice Sunday and the church minister reads out all the names of the soldiers, but for the vast majority of the community nobody knows who these people are so the idea was to fill in these names and find out more about them.” In the picture is Lord Glasgow, Fairlie minister Rev. Chris Vermeulen, and members of the Community Association at the opening night.

Opening times are from 2pm to 6pm on Wednesday and Thursday, 2pm to 8pm (Tuesday and Friday), and 11am to 5pm (Saturdays and Sunday). The exhibition closes this weekend.
