Hunterston ‘B’ power station has started its search for the latest batch of new apprentices. The scheme will see youngsters taken on at each of EDF Energy sites across the UK.

A total of 70 apprentices, with six from Hunterston B, will join the four-year scheme which, for the first two years, takes place at HMS Sultan - a world-class training centre in Portsmouth. The apprentices return for on-site training for the final two years.

Jim Whannel, Hunterston B power station’s apprentice co-ordinator, said: “We go into schools and talk to the pupils so they understand a little more about the scheme, encouraging them to apply, especially as the first two years are away from home.

“We are also holding a series of four information days at the Hunterston B visitor centre on Saturday 16th November, Sunday 17th November, Saturday 30th November and Sunday 8th December where you can find our more and meet the team. Places are at a premium so make sure you book.” In 2013 the site received hundreds of applications for the scheme and after tests and interview, 7 were selected.

Jim said: “The quality of applications was very high and so that means the quality of our apprentices will be very high. As always we are looking for applications from a diverse range of people.” Colin Weir, station director at Hunterston B power station said: “Most of our apprentices are from the local area and people recognise this is a great opportunity for any enthusiastic young person who has the right qualifications and a hunger to learn.

“Away from the classroom the apprentices will enjoy excellent sports and leisure facilities and they will undertake an extensive life skills package which includes the Duke of Edinburgh award along with some cultural visits to European cities.” Further information and application forms can be found at www.edfenergy.com/careers The sessions will be held at Hunterston. Spaces are limited and must be booked , on 01294 826000 between 8.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
