A local business group are hoping to have a say on the new prom design proposals in Largs.

Photo montages of the prom improvements were revealed at the end of last year, but many residents have taken to social media including the Largs News Facebook page, to voice concerns about the designs.

The new proposals included converting Gallowgate Square into a market area, and there is set to be a public consultation shortly.

A total of £126,000 has been earmarked from the seafront car park fund for the promenade improvements which are set to be constructed after the summer season in 2017.

The designs by TGP Architects were presented to councillors at the recent locality partnership group, and pointed out that the new project would be in keeping with good access for all users, including disabled people, in tandem with the opening of the new parasports centre in Largs.

The Largs BID group have been active in promoting tourism in the area by hosting a number of events last year, including the Largs Food Fest, classic car festival and Largs Live, and they say they are keen to have a say on the final designs.

A Largs BID statement read: "Largs BID have been advised by North Ayrshire Council that the present images for the proposed upgrading of the Largs Prom and Gallowgate Square area are conceptual.

"It is understood that NAC have decided to move forward with the engagement of consultants to finalise revised proposals. Largs BID have requested they are given the opportunity to fully engage with the designers and comment on the proposals.

"The Directors of Largs BID will only be in a position to comment on the quality, content and perceived suitability of the various strands of the project once the proposals have been presented to them.

"It is hoped that, whatever is ultimately brought forward and agreed, will prove to be additional attractions for visitors to the town and be perceived as enhancement of the amenities enjoyed by the residents of Largs."

TGP Architects have pointed out that robust materials will be used due to the nature of the climate and the storms which take place during the winter months.

Councillor Alex Gallagher of the ruling Labour administration at North Ayrshire Council pointed out that these are indicative designs, and has been calling for improvements to the prom in recent years.

He added: "I am certainly pleased with the way it is going but I think the colours schemes might be a bit rash. I was in Shetland recently and they have been building a lot of similar Scandinavian style kit with colours which are more muted, and more suited to the northern environment. I broadly support the design and approach."
