Largs Community Council are hoping to 'flag' up the problem of dog fouling areas in town in a bid to shame dog owners to stop the problem.
Last week, we reported environmental wardens had given on the spot fines to five locals for littering the area, including two people who didn't pick up after their dogs.
Patricia Perman also spoke at Largs Community Council about writing to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to look into bringing in new powers to fine dog owners who do not have a waste bag in their possession to pick up after their dog, after a similar initiative was introduced in some regions in England..
Patricia, who heads the Environmental committee, said: "My intention is from our funds, we have to buy some flags, and I want to identify bad areas just to show people the extent of the problem as I don't think people understand. It shouldn't be too expensive.
"I am going to get stencils to put reminders out in certain areas. It will emphasise the mess, and hopefully will make people realise."
Patricia stated that 50 flags would be used around the problem areas, and added: "Broomfields is one particularly bad area, and it hosts a children's event in July, so it is important to eradicate it."
Conservative councillor Tom Marshall said: "North Ayrshire Council did something similar years ago, and with press publicity from the Largs and Millport News, it proved very effective."
Patricia added that the community council were also in contact with Helen Miller of the council's street scene, which tackles dog fouling problems, about obtaining stencils to put painted reminders on pavement areas where the problem existed, after a similar initiative proved successful last year. Patricia said: "The stencil stays for quite a while, and it was very effective as it lasted for quite a long time.
Readers have also highlighted the extent of the problem, saying that even a pavement outside a local primary school was twice affected last week,.
Kim Jamieson said: "I must say the state of the grassed areas near the shore in Largs are covered in dog faeces. Also it doesn't help with the amount of streetlights that are out that we have to go out with a torch at night to check where we're stepping."
Local jogger Ale Nardini added: "It's great news that the local authority are finally tackling this minority of selfish, disgusting, lazy and inconsiderate dog owners who allow their dogs to foul public places."
