The Largs Events group, which organises the popular family fun weekend at Broomfields in July, has been saved.
Concerns were expressed that the event might be in danger without new blood joining the committee, but following a successful AGM last week, an influx of new members have got involved.
Cllr Alan Hill is the new Chairperson taking over from Ian Murdoch. Also new to the committee are Cllr Grace McLean, Elizabeth Gillespie, Chris Paton, Ryan Moir, Stewart Robbie and Anne Carson.
Cllr Hill commented “Largs Events has gone from strength to strength over recent years under the expert guidance of outgoing chairman Ian Murdoch. The Largs Family Fun Day which the group established a few years ago, and which takes place in late June each year, has become a Largs institution. The Family Fun Day is very much enjoyed by local families and those from further afield.
I have to pay tribute to the dedication and hard work of the volunteers who have contributed an enormous amount of their own time and effort into delivering first class events for locals and visitors. The outgoing committee have worked closely as a team and are dedicated to providing local people and visitors with excellent entertainment. They have also worked closely with local businesses and wherever possible have “shopped local”.
"Ian Murdoch is an extremely hard working person and I am especially delighted that he has agreed to stay on the committee as Vice Chair and will continue to play an active role in the local community. I look forward to working with him to continue to deliver and develop high quality events in Largs.”
Ian Murdoch added, “I would like to pay tribute to my fellow committee members Ken Welsh, Alastair Montgomery, Ewan and Sandra Mclean, Allison Murdoch, Caroline Berwick, Linda Maxwell, Jonathon White, Paul Gillespie, Morag Scott and Sarah Graham. Thanks also to Martin and Theresa Gillespie for their hard work and support as volunteers. This has been a strong team who have worked well together.
I am very proud of what we have achieved together but also recognise that the time has come for some of our founding members to step down and take a very well deserved break. I would like to thank each and every one of them for all of their help and assistance over the years.
I would like to single out the immense contribution made over the years by our Vice Chair, David Walsh who very sadly passed away last year. David was a real strength on the committee providing organisational skills, firm leadership and useful fund-raising expertise. His steady hand and sense of humour have been much missed.”
