There could be a long awaited solution to the long standing seagull problem on Largs seafront.

North Ayrshire Council are hoping that the introduction of ten new bins in time for Easter will make a big difference on the promenade.

Unfortunately, this was the scene over the weekend, as captured by Largs man Ian Murdoch, who is standing as an independent council candidate in the forthcoming council elections.

Ian said: "Last summer following many years of campaigning we had seagull and rat proof bins on the Prom. They instantly stopped 95 % of the problem. Everyone knows that we always get a good spell of weather in March & April. Where are they now?"

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “Following successful trials late last year, we are expecting delivery of new gull and rat-proof bins at the end of this week.

“We are confident this will provide a long-term solution to the problems caused by the gulls and help eliminate unsightly litter along the seafront.

“We trialled two different types of bins and have now agreed to purchase 10 ‘Nexus’ bins to be placed at suitable points along the promenade.

“The new bins have 140 litre capacity - about 40 per cent greater capacity than traditional bins – as well as the added bonus of being inaccessible to gulls and rats.

“We look forward to having the new bins installed and ready for use in time for the Easter Bank holiday.”

It is also a big boost to the 'News' Please Don't Feed the Seagulls campaign which was set up after Largs woman Jane Wilson contacted the 'News' to raise concerns about seagulls attacking people on Largs seafront for food, after a young boy was hurt during one particular incident.
