Inverclyde Sports Centre in Largs has now opened its doors to the public following a major £12million redevelopment funded by Scottish Government and sportscotland.

To welcome the local residents back to the centre a community open day full of activities and tours will be taking place on Sunday April 23.

The stunning building is the first of its kind in the UK, providing a residential sports training centre designed with inclusivity in mind.

Situated in the beautiful coastal town of Largs, Inverclyde opened on Monday April 3 providing world-class indoor and outdoor sports facilities and accommodation for users of all levels of physical and sensory ability from schools and clubs, to performance athletes and the local community.

Ahead of the opening, Sports Minister, Aileen Campbell, said: “The sportscotland National Sports Training Centre Inverclyde will be an exceptional facility for sportspeople from all across the country, as well as having strong community links here in Largs. I am really impressed by the attention to detail in the accommodation and wider facilities that complement the sports provision in the centre.”

Community users can book and use many of the facilities seven days a week at the centre, including football pitches, badminton and tennis courts and there is a range of fitness classes to complement the new 860m² fitness suite. The centre is also home to the National Gymnastics Performance Centre which also hosts a number of gymnastics classes for all levels and age groups.

In order to welcome back the community and showcase the best of what it has to offer, the centre is hosting an open day this Sunday which will feature a range of free ‘come and try’ activities such as badminton, tennis, mini golf, gymnastics and archery as well as offering free tours of the whole facility. This includes the new accommodation block for the centre’s residential groups which the local community wouldn’t normally have access to.

The centre’s coaches and a group of young leaders from the local schools will be supporting the activities on the day and will be encouraging everyone to take part.

There will also be fun craft activities for children as well as being able to relax in the café for refreshments.

John Kent, Centre Principal said: “We have always been an integral part of the community here in North Ayrshire and we want to be able to showcase our new facilities by welcoming everyone for a day of fun and community spirit.

We hope this opportunity will give everyone an insight in to what we do and what we now have to offer along with having some fun with their family and friends.”

The open day will take place on Sunday between 11am–3pm and is open to everyone to come along and enjoy.
