Motorists will now be charged £2 for dropping off passengers at Glasgow Airport from this week.

The move, which comes into force at 3am on Thursday, is being introduced alongside a new combined drop-off and pick-up zone to improve the flow of traffic around the airport.

More than 7,500 people signed a petition against the new charge.

Glasgow Airport has said: "A new combined quick pick-up/drop-off area will be introduced at the airport on the ground floor opposite the main terminal.

"All drivers dropping passengers off or picking them up will need to use the new area and there will be a new road layout to access it.

"A fee is being introduced for dropping off (£2 for 10 minutes). A fee to pick up has been in place since 2010.

A £1 drop-off charge introduced at Aberdeen Airport in 2015 - which later hiked to £2 - sparked similar controversy.

Edinburgh Airport introduced a £1 fee in 2010.
