The Largs Museum celebrates a special milestone as it opens its doors for the summer season on Friday from 2-5pm.

It is the 50th anniversary of the museum building which was purchased in 1967 by Alex Simpson who acquired two weavers cottages in Manse Court to house his growing collection of photographs and local artefacts.

The original copy of the first meeting minute book of the historical society will be on display, and you can also see the Largs Town Council Provost's gown from the 1960s and 70s, as well as the original certificate presented to Alexander Simpson when he was made a freeman of Largs. There is also a range of historic photographs, artefacts and fascinating background to the town held within its four walls which is something of an Aladdin's Cave of hidden gems of the past.

It is hoped, volunteer permitting, for the museum in Kirkgate Close, in the lane between The George bar and The Great Outdoors shop, to be open seven days a week from 2-6pm.

If anyone wants to check their family history in Largs, please get in touch by contacting 687081, and it is the same number to arrange group bookings for the Skelmorlie Aisle, which can be arranged outwith the museum's opening hours.
