Fairlie will be hosting the return of the historic Raft Race during the Fairlie Gala weekend.

Teams consisting of two or more people will race their self-built crafts along a section of Fairlie beach.

Organisers hope the event will be well supported by local and visiting teams.

Fairlie has a proud maritime culture and heritage and this years raft race will be centred around a “Creatures of the Sea” theme. The rafts are to be constructed from recycled materials.

The winning team will have many honours bestowed upon them and will hold the highly coveted ‘Champions’ title until the next race.

The number of teams racing will ultimately be dictated by the level of safety and boat cover. Get your registration in asap and start organising your raft. You don’t want to be left high and dry!

It is all part of a new move for the annual gala celebration which has moved around the village since it was re-launched over ten years ago. It started off in the grounds of the Village Inn and Mudhook, before returning to the swing park and Highfield Terrace area.

The Gala Day takes place on Saturday 19 August.

But the move to make the festival more nautical and highlight the local sea is hoped by organisers to re-invigorate the Gala which will also have Firth of Clyde Coastal Rowing group rib trips, custard pie fight, facepainting, birds of prey, bottle stall, barbecue, licensed bar with real ales, and live music from 'Crisis'.
