Have you ever been in a conversation with a friend or colleague about memories of your favourite children's television show, or top 10 tune?
The feeling of nostalgia that it brings also helps bring back a number of other memories including perhaps where you first heard the song, your time at school, or where you were working during a specific period.
The Celebrating Memories Group held every month at Largs Masonic Lodge has been running since 2015 follows a very similar theme.
The group started as “Largs Lads Club” in February 2015 for men in the community who were affected by dementia and the discussion was about Sporting Memories. This informal group has developed into an event for people with dementia and their carer. Discussions are formed around gentle image based fun quizzes on a range of subjects including sport, movies, television and music.
These quizzes help prompt memories and often a discussion ensues about the featured subject. People enjoy talking about the great moments in sport and entertainment and the group is proving popular with those attending. The feel good factor of attending a group can sometimes stay with the person for the rest of the day.
Presented by Lawrence Lindsay, it is a bright and breezy format interspersed with video clips and musical tunes of different eras in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s, and Lawrence's own personal knowledge of the television shows, and the world of film, makes for an entertaining and informative two hours.
Listening in to some of these conversations showed that the Celebrating Memories event evoked more memories and recollections from attending concerts to actors and actresses who performed in some of these famous tv shows. A special feature on the city of Liverpool also featured including clips from The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Cilla Black. A short history of The Cavern Club also featured.
Television shows which featured included 'On the Buses', 'Tales of the Unexpected' and 'Man about the House' as theme tunes are played and pictures from the show also appear. And even one of the most famous moments in TV history was recalled in 'Who Shot J.R?' in Dallas, all helping to spark memories of these great shows.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:
The Royal Arch Masons have shown great support for the group and they also currently raise funds for the Iris Murdoch Building of The University of Stirling where research is made into bringing about lasting and meaningful improvements to the lives of people with dementia and their carers. The Lodge also raises funds for other charities.
The group is held on the last Thursday of each month, the next being Thursday October 26 at 2pm to 4pm. Anyone interested in attending the group can contact Lawrence Lindsay on 01294 550321 or 07766 710702.
