A new book which researches the men who died in the Great War who are named on the Largs War Memorial is now available.
Ian McIntosh MBE has compiled the work which includes information gained from the archives of the Largs and Millport Weekly News.
Ian said: “The information from the Largs and Millport News has been invaluable in enabling me to complete my research. I have now collated the information over many hundreds of hours of research into my book.
“The research started on a journey to identify the 85 men named on the War Memorial has ended up identifying considerably more than double that number, all of who lived or were associated with the town. The booklet contains an introduction that describes the contribution and sacrifice of men and women of Largs in the Great War, and short biographies of all of these men, with photographs were found.”
The Largs War Memorial, pictured, was erected in 1921 to the men of the town killed in war. In addition to the 85 men named on the war memorial, a further 110 casualties from, or associated with the town, have been identified. Ian’s Roll of Honour records the biography of all 195 men. Overall, nearly 800 men and women from, or associated with the town, went to war on land, at sea, and in the air.
Copies of the book have been donated to Largs Museum and Largs Library, and a small number of copies are available for sale, in aid of Erskine Hospital, at £6.50 each.
Ian added: “Having completed the project, I have now started the research the men from Largs and Fairlie who died in the Second World War, and also a similar activity in relation to Millport covering both the First and Second World War. It is also my intention to complete a similar project for Skelmorlie and Wemyss Bay.”
