Work has started on the new promenade improvements this week.
Aubery and Moorburn shelters are being renovated, and the street furniture will be removed to enable the old tar surface to be taken away, and a new tar surface will be laid from the pier to the Lifeboat Station.
Independent councillor Ian Murdoch, who took the above photo, said he was delighted that the long awaited prom resurfacing was about to get underway.
It is part of the Largs Masterplan improvements which underwent a consultation earlier in the year, and scaled back on the plans for dramatic new shelter designs, and instead the public called for prom resurfacing.
Building a new market place area in Gallowgate Square which could also host live music is also in the planning, and work is set to begin on that early in the New Year.
However, concerns were raised by readers last week in relation to the future of the historic water feature at the centre of Gallowgate Square.
A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council, said: “The improvements to Gallowgate Square will help create a flexible event space, which could host small concerts, farmers’ markets etc, and will help make a huge difference to the heart of Largs.
“To achieve this, the water feature will be carefully removed and given its local heritage value, we will retain the fountain in a safe place.
“The works at Gallowgate Square are scheduled to begin in the New Year.”
The council also pointed out that while they had not received any requests regarding an alternative location to be found for the water fountain, it will be held in secure storage should requests be made.
During a recent Towns Partnership meeting, local businesswoman Toni Dawson had expressed frustration about the lack of progress regarding improvements to Gallowgate Square, but Cllr. Alex Gallagher, who is economy chair at North Ayrshire Council, provided reassurances that the work would be getting underway soon.
Councillor Alex Gallagher, Cabinet Member for Economies, said: “The event space in Gallowgate Square opens up a range of opportunities and could bring in some fantastic entertainment to the town. The work on the shelters will also make a marked improvement, while the resurfacing works will be welcomed by everyone, whether it’s cyclists, families or dog walkers, that use the promenade.
“We are all looking forward to the works getting started now.”
