The long awaited Largs Prom resurfacing got underway on Monday morning.
Independent councillor Ian Murdoch contacted the ‘News’ to state that he was delighted that the works were underway, and asked that people take care and respect the restrictions.
A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “The resurfacing work will cover the area from the ferry terminal to the RNLI building.
“The prom will be re-surfaced with a similar black tarmac finish and will improve the quality of the prom allowing people the continued enjoyment of this local attraction for years to come. The budget for the prom resurfacing works is £100,000 and should be completed by mid-December.
“There is also work underway to refurbish both shelters on the north prom and to create a flexible events space at Gallowgate Square. The square works will start in the New Year.”
Conservative councillor Tom Marshall commented: “The prom is going to be resurfaced with black asphalt with red chips yet Kilwinning and Irvine are getting polished granite. It will be a vast improvement after having just been patched over in the past.”
Labour councillor Alex Gallagher said: “I am glad that the work has at last started, it is only the first half of the job,. It has been five years of work since 2012 when I suggested that it would be a good thing for the prom to be resurfaced after the storms. I would have liked it to be polished surface but the is cash not available. A granite surface would have been possible if Cllr.Marshall hadn’t insisted on improving Gallowgate Square.
"I have no problem with that project, but that is the reality of the situation.”
