A new children's book based on seafaring adventures on the Clyde has been released in time for Christmas.

The books tell the comic tales of a wise old sea-captain, Captain Bobo, his trusty crew and his ever-faithful wee scottie dog Salty. The action is partly set on the Captain’s paddle-steamer Red Gauntlet.

Explaining the inspiration behind the books Kay said; ‘The books are a celebration of the Clyde, its wonderful paddle-steamers and ferries, and all the Captains and crews that have served the community so well over the years.

‘My father was one of CalMac’s senior captains and I grew up hearing stories of his time at sea. There were so many funny episodes – I just knew a new generation would enjoy them too’.

The books are aimed at children 4+ and are beautifully illustrated in full colour by long-time collaborator Matt Rowe. The first book ‘Bananas’ tells the story of what happens when the Island Safari Park loses its star attraction – and what happens when Captain Bobo steps forward to try to save the day.

The Captain Bobo books are available from Waterstones, W H Smith and Inverclyde’s Cardwell Garden Centre.

The second book in the series is due to be published Summer 2018, and is written by Greenock author Kay Hutchison and Glasgow born co-author Ricard Dikstra, and illustrated by Matt Rowe.

Cardwell Garden Centre is hosting a promotion event for The Adventures of Captain Bobo on Sunday 10 December from 2pm-4pm.
