A Largs resident has sought support from the community council in the ongoing issue regarding unsightly bins dominating the area at Gallowgate Square.
The area is set for a major transformation with the square being resurfaced and converted into a market area and live music outdoor stage.
However, during the recent Largs Community Council meeting, resident John McCracken said he did not receive an equivocal answer from North Ayrshire Council in terms of the removal of the bins.
John said: “I sent a letter outlining my concerns about the bins. I was told that the council will be removing the planters and water feature and resurfacing the square and putting benches along the sides, but there were no details about the bins.
“The main thrust is dealing with the ongoing problems of the bins which dominate the whole square.”
The council told Mr McCracken that the issue to do with the wheelie bins on the square was ‘still to be resolved’.
John added that it was one of the major concerns of local residents during the consultation process that the bin problem was sorted, and voiced fears that the issue was not being attended to.
Independent councillor Ian Murdoch said: “I have been pursuing this matter. The current situation is the council are exploring all sorts of options how to incorporate bins in the square. However, I don’t want them accommodated in the square - I don’t think they should be there at all. I have spoken to two other Largs councillors who agree, so three out of four councillors in this ward support that, maybe four. Even if the council come back with a proposal that they have a design to keep bins in the square, they will have to get the four councillors to agree to it.
“At this moment in time, I am pretty confident there will not be bins in the square.”
Community council chairman Douglas Blair said: “I think we all agree that they should keep bins off the square.”

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We are currently considering options that would improve bin storage at Gallowgate Square and will engage with the local elected members on proposals in due course. As a temporary measure, the bins have been re-located to the west side of Gallowgate Street while the public realm works to the Square are underway.”
