THE ongoing wait for Aubery Pond to be repaired and restored continues into March, as repairs to the beauty spot have continually been delayed. Resident Jean Featherstone contacted the ‘News’ to ask what the latest situation was regarding the pond which has been dry since last April. She said: “Easter is under a month away and I think it is important that Aubery is restored as soon as possible. It is a great shame as the model boat club is very popular and hasn’t been able to use the pond for a year. I even know somebody who has moved to Largs specifically because they have a model boat and want to use the pond. “It is lovely to see when the model boats are being used.” At the turn of the year, Mrs Featherstone pointed out that she had spoken to Cllr. Murdoch about the restoration of the pond, and he had said that work was due to start on January 11. Cllr. Murdoch said: “ I have been involved with Aubery Pond for around the last nine months. I have had meetings with the Model Boat Club and with Council Officers and I am in practically daily contact with the Model Boat Club. I have over one hundred emails corresponding with NAC and the Model Boat Club in order to have the repairs completed and make the pond operational. I have been given many dates when a contractor was due to be on site, only to find they have not turned up. “I have been given completion dates which were not met. I asked for the base seams to be sealed with bitumen and I was told they will be sealed with a sealant that can not be installed in less than five degrees and takes about two weeks to cure. I can understand that we have had many days that have been less than five degrees but on many of the occasions there has been no one on site it has been over five degrees. Also, it has not rained or been less than five degrees for all of the last nine months. “I asked for a new gate valve to be fitted and the pipe to be repaired and this has been done. I also asked for a new bung to be installed. “I also attended the full council meeting in Cunninghame House and during a recess I had a chat with the Head of Service and he assured me he will do everything he can to bring this to a speedy conclusion. I hope that finally once the current adverse weather clears we will see some progress and get the pond finished and get the Club sailing again.” Works started before the Christmas/New Year break. The joints to the base of the pond have been cut out in preparation for the sealant to be applied. A test application of sealant shall be carried out as soon as weather permits, the council told us in January. NAC confirmed to the ‘News’ that the works, carried out by W&I Gilbert would be complete for Easter. Cllr. Murdoch said: “I sincerely hope so, as this is something that has gone on for far too long already
