This weekend is the last of three weeks of Transport Scotland and Transerv's road resurfacing works to affect the A78, but businessman John Corrigan has again hit out at the timing of the roadworks.

He believes that the roadworks should not have been allowed to take place during the school holidays, and told the 'News' that businesses have been affected.

Mr Corrigan, who owns Deli Il Cardo, as well as a number of other shops in the town, said: "It was another bad Saturday for Largs shops, and worse than last week.

"Businesses are all suffering at the hands of the government (Transport Scotland) who have not considered the impact on Largs at all."

He stated that delicatessen business was down 20% in the first week, and it was worse during the second week of the closure, and said he had spoken to other businesses including fish shop and local butchers who were also affected.

However, Conservative councillor Tom Marshall said: "I would like to congratulate Transport Scotland for resurfacing the road. Yes, it has caused inconvenience, but we now have a brand new road."

This weekend, the road will be closed at Wemyss Bay, from 8pm on Friday 20th to 6am on Monday 23 April for the resurfacing of approximately 8 km of trunk road adjacent to the Wemyss Bay ferry terminal.

Independent councillor Ian Murdoch said: "While it has been frustrating and inconvenient for many, the first two stages have been done to timescale, and the finished job has been to a very high standard.

"There have been other problems on the road, and I am hoping both Transport Scotland and Transerv will deal with them in due course."

Following the A78 Largs resurfacing works last weekend and after discussions with Police Scotland, North Ayrshire and Inverclyde Councils, and due to concerns raised by local elected members, Brisbane Glen Road will also be closed

Traffic management operatives will be located just south of the cemetery at the south end of Brisbane Glen Road and at the junction of Old Largs Road/Dunrod Road. Local access for residents and businesses along this route will be permitted during this period, however no access will be permitted for trunk road or through traffic.

Please note that CCTV will be in operation during these works for the safety of the workforce and road users.

A Transerv spokesman said: "We can appreciate the frustration that may occur over such short notice closure of a road closure and we will continue to work with stakeholders to minimise any disruption."
