North Ayrshire MP Patricia Gibson said she is deeply alarmed by the Westminister government's stance on Syria.
Last week, the Prime Minister delivered a statement to Parliament on recent air-strikes on Syria in which the UK participated, alongside the USA and France.
Along with other SNP MPs, North Ayrshire & Arran MP, Patricia Gibson, pressed the Prime Minister on whether further air strikes would be carried out, which she repeatedly failed to rule out or properly address. In addition, the Prime Minister could give no clear response as to what was being done to prevent the escalation of the Syrian conflict and ignored concerns raised by Mrs Gibson that there was insufficient public support for these strikes.
Patricia Gibson said: “It is bad enough that Parliament was completely by-passed in the decision to launch these strikes but the fact that the Prime Minister has no answers as to what can be done to prevent the escalation of conflict in this fragile region and the tense international situation, appeared to be unconcerned at the lack of public support for these strikes and will not rule out further such strikes, is deeply alarming.
“The legal basis for these strikes is questionable and there is clearly no long or short-term plan, no specified, achievable outcomes, no clear, effective strategy that benefits civilians on the ground in Syria and no indication of an exit strategy. This makes the UK Government’s action, which MPs had no time to consider beforehand, completely wrong-headed.”
