Like everyone in the football community, I was shocked at the news that Sir Alex Ferguson was taken into intensive care after suffering a brain haemorrhage.
It is a relief to know that he is now on the road to recovery.
I will never forget the time Alex Ferguson came to my aid many moons ago when I was an 18 year old footballer at a reserve league match between Morton and St Mirren.
I was playing with Morton, and we were playing at Love Street, and I was actually sitting in the stand between Ferguson and the charismatic Morton manager Hal Stewart.
And Fergie says to me: "What's wrong with you today George - why are you not playing?"
First of all, I was amazed he even knew who I was!
I said: "No, I injured myself and hurt my ankle when I was warming up."
He then asked me if the physio had looked at it yet, and I said: "No, I have not had the chance to ask."
The next thing I know Fergie gets off his seat and shouts down to the touchline to St Mirren physio Rikki McFarlane, who later became the manager.
Next thing, I was taken into the treatment room, and I was strapped up.
So I can say Alex Ferguson once came to my rescue - it was a great touch, and it is things like that you remember.
I used to wonder if he would ever come and buy me when he became manager at Manchester United - Largs Thistle could have made a fortune!
I was getting NHS treatment last week at Port Glasgow health centre - and the physio played under Sir Alex for four years - Stephen Cosgrove. He played with Manchester United through the reserve teams, and he was in Barcelona when Manchester United beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League Final in 1999.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:
I have always admired Sir Alex Ferguson, I have watched some of his lectures at Harvard University on youtube, some of it is basic common sense stuff, and some of it is fantastic.
If you think of all the players he has been involved with over the years at St Mirren, Aberdeen and Manchester United, he has always had a winning mentality.
I remember his famous interview when Aberdeen beat Rangers, and he was furious, and he said that cup performance was not acceptable.
He had just won the Scottish Cup against Rangers!
It is remarkable to think that his Aberdeen side are the last British team to have beaten Real Madrid in a European final in 1983.
Sir Alex has always set the highest standards - and what he has achieved in his footballing career is phenomenal, and I wish him all the very best in making a full recovery.
