POLICE are set to step in after anti-social yobs turned a popular playpark in Largs into a party zone.
Loud music has been blaring out during gatherings of young people at Anderson Park, with the revellers leaving a trail of broken bottles behind in their wake.
Community activist Patricia Perman says the problem of broken glass and litter which had previously been a problem at the Douglas Park shelter has simply moved to Anderson Park.
The issue was raised at a community council meeting.
Patricia said: "The youths have moved to Anderson Park now that the Douglas Park shelter has been removed.
"There are broken bottles, and even disco music, and cans chucked in gardens.
"Councillor Tom Marshall called for the Douglas Park shelter to be brought down last year because those people that live around the park pay a lot of council tax.
"All these people in Hill Street, next to Anderson Park.
"Do they pay a lot of council tax?
"Are you going to take notice of them?"
Cllr Marshall responded: "Nobody has raised the issue at Anderson Park with me personally, and if they do, I will take action.
"The bottom line is that it is a police matter.
"There had been a problem at Douglas Park which existed for 20-odd years and nothing had got done."
Inspector Colin Convery of Largs police told the News that police would be stepping up patrols at the location.
He said: "The area has been raised as potential problem location and is now subject to our summer action plan for extra attention and appropriate interventions."
Largs community councillor Margaret Wood, who sits on the council's policing committee, says she has spoken in-depth with the police regarding Anderson Park.
She said: "The police have been getting calls about the park."
Anderson Park is a popular spot at this time of year and includes a basketball court and children's play facilities.
A North Ayrshire Council spokesman said: "“To report instances of environmental crimes such as littering, fly-tipping or dog fouling, please contact our Streetscene Environmental Team on 01294 310000.
“We would also remind residents that if they witness or are concerned about anti-social behaviour, please report this to Police Scotland in the first instance.”
