THERE are fears that a railway bridge in Largs could collapse unless proper signage is enforced.
Coaches have been seen using a road on May Street which has specific weight restrictions.
There is a sign for northbound traffic but no warning for traffic travelling south along Irvine Road and turning right into May Street.
The matter was raised during a police report at the community council meeting held at Largs Library.
Residents are concerned that there could be a serious accident.
Community councillor Patricia Perman said: “There are buses which are coming and turning right into May Street.
“There is no sign between Morrisons and the junction with May Street to indicate the issue.
“I feel it is important that is something is done to address this.”
Chairman Douglas Blair added: “We don’t want to see a vehicle lying on the railway line.”
Local resident Jim Perman says he has seen coaches using the street in order to avoid town centre congestion.
Emergency services are notified of weight restricted bridges in order to allow them to plan access when required.
The bridge at May Street is owned and maintained by Network Rail.
North Ayrshire Council previously told the News that if they became aware of any abuse of the weight restriction they would notify Network Rail in order to allow them the opportunity to inspect the structure.
The railway bridge section of May Street has a sign indicated that there is a vehicle weight limit of seven and a half tonnes.
