Police support drug addict bus

Comments (5) | Print | Email

The Brisbane Evangelical Church bring a single decker bus to the entrance of the Gateside Street car park in Largs on Tuesday evenings for two hours to hand out free food packages to local drug addicts.

Pastor Tom Stables told the 'News': "We are trying to help and get them to get their lives sorted out. We have managed to get three people sent away to Christian rehabilitation centres and they are all doing well.

"In fact, since we set up the programme, one has just a graduation ceremony to complete the programme and has got a job in a woman's rehabilitation centre. Two young men we were seeing have also gone into rehab. We are just our second month into running the converted bus. People can come and have a chat and we can help point them in the right direction. It is because there is a problem that we are trying to do something about it which is positive. Largs is not any different to any other town."

"It is part of what we consider a service to the community because we are Christians. When we approached the police to say what we thought would be a good site for the bus, they were delighted that someone was doing something constructively about the drug problem."

Being a resident in Gateside Street I am totally outraged by this - I personally, as a single female, feel unsafe enough walking home at night without numerous junkies in the car park next to my house!!!! What is the world coming to exactly? We all work hard and pay taxes and struggle to pay for gas and electric and have gone without food a lot in the past two months yet these addicts are given stuff for free - what a great way to encourage them to stay on drugs!!! Well Done Largs - you never fail to please!!!

Based on the previous comment by "Resident" I fear for the sanity of this town. For once people have reached out to try to help those in need, and your reaction is one of "outrage"? I mean, people are giving these drug addicts an invaluable chance to change their lives and turn them around, and you complain that giving them free food that is bought by the volunteers for this purpose is unfair? Its a chance for them to change their lives, so look beyond your own problems and see that people out there need help more than you do.

In response - If you had been attacked and mugged by junkies you would feel the same way - I am not oppsed to helping them but keep it away from there - why cant they use their own church hall or the medical centre carpark where people do not need to walk by in fear!! Not only that, being a resident in Gateside St and having found drug paranephalia in my close when there are children in the close is not a positive thing. Yes give these people help but without leaving the general public in fear for their safety!!!

Ahaha The police seem to be supporting everything these days in Largs, with little evidence to show there achievements. Most of the people that will turn up for free food will be wanting to turn there life around I imagine and will be harmless, but you never know.
