Round the twist ... Transport Scotland in surprise claim

Transport Scotland have insisted that they NEVER wanted a roundabout in Largs town centre - and say an alternative signalised junction they proposed could have allowed buses to safely relocate to the railway station.

Last week, the trunk roads body claimed that, during consultation over the traffic management plans - conducted in conjunction with North Ayrshire Council - "no objections were raised by Transport Scotland or Amey about the locating of the bus stop at the station".

However, they said that they DID object to "the re-location of the pedestrian crossing" opposite the station, and "no safe alternative was brought forward".

A statement read: "Transport Scotland and Amey suggested that a signalised junction, rather than a roundabout at Aitken Street should be introduced. This would have provided safe pedestrian crossing facilities and allowed the relocation of the bus stop to the station.

Good on North Ayrshire - funnily enogh locals and visitors can now find a parking place for an hour in the main street now that he shopkeepers and there employees cannot park outside there front doors allday

they can of coarse use the other off street car parks but that would mean a walk or paying

My folks came down last Wednesday. Normally, the old dear likes to go and buy the crap that older women like to buy. I reckon she drops around 150 quid each visit. The old boy likes to stoat about looking at the crap that older men like to look at. They then meet up and go for something to eat - spending another 30 quid.

You know what's coming next... they couldn't get parked - on a rainy Wednesday. The *my* bad news is that they freeloaded at my place all afternoon. The *my* good news is that they won't be back.

I reckon your average "carload" of tourists spend around £120. I estimate that Largs is now 50 "convenient spaces" light. Each "convenient space" is turned over maybe 5 times per day. Go do the math.

Seamus, pull your head out of the sand(or some other dark, cold, smelly place) man - crawl back under the scummy rock from whence you staggered and leave us all vermin-free. Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston used to be lovely places when I was younger; full of shops and convenient parking. If this isn't rectified soon, it's curtains for many businesses in Largs. If businesses go down the stank, next in the firing line is house prices.

I was speaking to a well known businessman two weeks ago. His takings are down 70% on last year for food. Business is simply unsustainable under these conditions. Businesses need to unite on this and withhold the payment of rates until this issue is resolved. I'd be amazed if at least ten commercial properties aren't on the market by January 2011.

Open your eyes, people of Largs. Your town is on a life-support machine and NAC has its filthy leftist hand on the plug.
