WEIRS' SPORTING VOW TO LARGS

Published: 12 Apr 2012 11:0027 comments

Euromillionaires Colin and Chris Weir have dismissed a national tabloid report that they were dropping a scheme to give Largs modern football facilities.

A story this week claimed that the £161m couple who have set up a charity foundation were 'pulling out' of the Barrfields park project because secretary Donald Reid had parted company with the club.

However, in a statement to the 'News', Colin and Chris Weir denied walking away from the project with Thistle.

Colin doesn't seem like the kind of guy out to settle scores with his new found wealth.

The real story here is why Donald Reid was sacked. I see this guy week in, week out, bursting his hump in all sorts of weather, solely for the benefit of Largs Thistle, and as such, the people of Largs.

For years I've watched Donald Reid - home and away - constantly on the move, always involved in an activity benefiting the club and its supporters and all off his own back, for no remuneration whatsoever.

I can say hand on heart that Largs Thistle is full of good committed people to a man(and woman) but no one works consistently harder than Donald Reid - NO ONE.

I read the article in the Sun and discounted it as the usual crock you usually find in that rag but I was absolutely outraged at Douglas Bennie's comments being made in such a public and undignified fashion and as such, surely his own tenure and suitability for same has to be called into question.

Simply put then: How can any sane thinking man or woman possibly doubt the commitment, integrity and efficacy of Donald Reid at Largs Thistle FC?

I would like to add that Tommy Scoullar is by far the hardest working man at Largs Thistle , all the guys and girls work hard for the love of the club but Tommy is there 6 days a week working his socks off with his sidekick Pat R without people like this the club would not exist .

All the committee are hard working. But Donald Reid is the one that has got LargsThistle in this mess.He can only see ££££££ for him-self.The committee were right getting rid of him. To "Concerned" take off your coloured tinted glasses. True Largs supporter know the real workers.

Was it not Mr Reid that went to the Sun newspaper? Was it not Mr Reid that left the club and went to Saltcoats Vics & Winton Rovers in the past? You have to question his commitment to the club. When I've been to the games all I've seen is Donald standing there doing nothing. I've never seen him doing the real work.

The majority of the above is malicious tripe and should be removed by the moderator.

Donald Reid should be thanked for his years of commitment to the club and likewise the Weirs for their wonderful offer of upgrading the pitch.

Everyone on the Thistle committee, past and present, does it for the love of the club. Well done to all of them.

Here Here!! There is no one bigger than the club! As in every committee there will be disagreements. if everyone agreed about every thing it would be nothing short of amazing.

The committee should pull together and get on with it. By the looks of it colin and Christines offer will benifit the whole of Largs when it finally does come off. A big well done to them.

Stop the point scoring and move on.

The commitment of Donald Reid is not the issue, rather the lack of commitment . If the team has not been re-signed for next year then there is a problem and largs thistle will have no team playing on the promised Astro turf. Mr reid has forced many people off the committee with his own agenda and every dog has his day. As an after thought i know of only one person who has jumped teams at junior board room level but i am hesitant to say as my comment may be removed by the moderator.

Can't believe that this issue is dominating the news at Thistle. The team is playing in the Scottish semi-finals over the next week, that is the "real" story for the club. The level of personal comment about Donald Reid is unfair when you consider the amount of hard work he has carried out over the years.Every club has issues within committees but Mr Bennie is wrong to have made public things which should have been kept "in house", at least until the cup run is over.Perhaps he could clarify if the rumour that he is shortly leaving the area to live in England is true? This sort of nonsense is what keeps people from joining committees and being involved in the running of the club.Shotts must be enjoying this farce.

Whitekoffi - I assume you are referring to Allan McLuckie jumping teams at boardroom level from Kilwinning Rangers to Cumnock Juniors.

As for forcing people off the committee, well I think if you compare Donald Reid in his long association with the club with Douglas Bennie in his short association over the past five years then Douglas is probably winning that race.

Regarding the comments in the Sun attributed to Douglas Bennie about Donald not doing his job as match secretary for the past six months - who has been doing the job of match secretary for that period then? Or can we expect Shotts to put in a protest over un-registered players if they lose the semi final? Or has Douglas just taken the huff because it was Donald and not him that was dealing with the Weirs?

I guess it's just a battle of egos and Thistle look like being the losers.

sheldon cooper, thank you i shall call that two, although i wonder what the Buffs fans think of McLuckie. scotland calling, the said person was filmed on BBC Alba stating to be a life long Largs Thistle fan. He was also quoted in The Sun as saying he has been involved with Largs Thistle since he was 17. He has served on the committees of two other Junior clubs in the claimed time with Largs, quoted and stated!Fact! That suggests that he has his own agenda.

Largs thistle are happy without him, the Weirs are happy to move on, Donald has the option to follow Largs as a supporter. Everyones a winner !

I have followed Thistle for 25 years, from struggling to field 10 players in the old Second Division with a goalkeeper with one functioning hand to winning the West of Scotland in 1991, to going on to conquer the Junior game in the campaign of 1994, and well beyond. I want our club to flourish, yet I have always been frustrated by the clubs' ability to shoot ourselves in the foot at critical points in our recent history. Like any Thistle fan, I was delighted when I heard that Colin Weir wanted to invest in his local team, but was not surprised when internal politics conspired to hold our club back in its pursuit of progress.

Like any loyal and regular supporter of our club, I have always been aware of the dedication and hard work of Donald Reid at Barrfields. He has been integral to the progression of the Largs Thistle, regardless of any personal opinion or any previous association with any other junior club. Donald has a far longer affiliation with our club than than the current president, whose connection with the club I was oblivious to until his appointment. As far as I have been informed, this is an association that will not last until next season, when he heads for pastures new. This makes me gravely concerned as to who will take the club forward in the seasons to come.

There is very little reward or kudos in the work of a Match Secretary, or indeed President of a Junior football club. It is a labour of love and one which is appreciated by true supporters of any club. However, when the situation descends into a point scoring exercise between a relatively recent 'face' and a servant of some decades of Thistle, I cannot help but worry about what will become of our team.

The recent cup run, which will no doubt be appreciated by all followers of the team, only serves to paper over the cracks. A team confronted with the real prospect of relegation may face years in the Junior wilderness. If we do slip down the divisions, we require leadership and a blueprint to ensure our survival and progression. If we have nobody willing to take on the burden of Thistle's problems, I fear for our club. I was gladdened to hear that Mr Weir wants to help in our progress. However, without a real figurehead at Largs, who could blame the potential benefactor if he decided to wash his hands of this whole sorry mess?

It is time the club put petty squabbles and internal wrangling to the side and concentrated on our future. The plans which have been put in place could make Largs Thistle one of the most competitive teams in the Junior game. We missed the chance in '94 when some player's demands and egoism on the part of some 'high ranking professionals' on the committee put the club back in its' pursuit of progress. It is time to 'put heads together', get over personal issues, back the team and make ourselves a club to be reckoned with in the Junior game. The 'bones' of a great club are in place. Let's push things forwards...................

Loverings teeth, a good, thoughtful post, until the last paragraph. I have served on the committee before and have indeed watched Frank grin without his teeth and cry with his head in his hands, bandaged knee and all from an era that will live with me forever. The only issue i have is that after 1991 and 1994 it was the"high ranking professional" players and not the committee that brought a halt to the promising times. One in particular who claimed to have won largs the "scottish" after coming on as a subsitute. I know you mention this but a line has to be drawn and in part this is what Donald cant seem to grasp. I have employed people and when someone wants to walk away or quit the approch i take is "think about it for a week but after that its over,no return". A lot of people have been forced away from Largs, players ,managers ,donors and good committee men for various reasons and by different individuals and most are too proud for a return, but when you get guys coming and going as it suits them and to force issues then this will rub people up the wrong way. You are either committed or you are not. Donald has given what he can to Largs and for that a lot of fans will be grateful. Douglas may move on and without the two of them Largs will survive. At what level, who knows? But remember this, the committee voted Donald out not a single vote from Douglas.

I have read many of the comments above and it's clear for all to see that they have been written by club members, committee members and lest we forget club associates past and present.

What astonishes me more is some of the venom, the blame and the counter blame that they are throwing at each other via the medium of the L&M and its blatantly obvious this has been brewing for some time now in the boardroom or stands. I would be as bold to suggest that if they all sat round a table or even invited ACAS to the talks then there could of been a level playing field if you pardon the pun.

It would appear to me that they have all been back stabbing for years and this is still evident by the ridiculous made up names above. I am a great believer if you are going to put pen to paper then it is common courtesy to sign it with your own name and suggest further contributors do likewise.

All the supporters want is a team that performs well and a committee that can effectively communicate with each other so lets get on with it and keep the ball in the park.

    P.S

I am no relation to Mr Reid and as you will see from many comments in L&M going back years I am MR J RIED.

Don't think anybody is questioning that the job is hard. What people are questioning is Mr Reid's loyalty to Largs Thistle. If he was so loyal a Largs fan , why did he go to other clubs and help them against Largs!!

Munny, bravo. A cynic would say you were informed of Mr Walker yesterday. I suppose only an academic is due an opinion? Since you are able to "mathematically enlighten" us why not find out how many committee members have served with their junior clubs over the past 30 years. Then find out how many have served with other clubs.Cross check the stats, work it out as a percentage and post the answer. I would guess under 0.1 maybe even 0.05 percent. My last comment on the subject is why do some people think that it is alright to drop Largs Thistle but not alright when Largs Thistle do the same.

The only people with the "agenda" seem to be obsessed with something which happened before many of the current players were even born. It would appear that perhaps they left the committee and hold some sort of grudge.....I think we know who you are.... however as several posters have encouraged to move on and look to the semi relegation battle and possibly more significantly the FUTURE.

This spat is more between Douglas Bennie and Colin Weir rather than Donald Reid. Donald was sacked because he was the only one Colin would deal with. That shouldn't have been a problem if the committee had concentrated on the football team and let Donald try to get as much support for Thistle as he could from Colin. Unfortunately egos appear to have got in the way. Ridiculous when you think the team are on the verge of a Cup Final with an extremely wealthy benefactor potentially waiting in the wings.

A very simplistic comment from the pro-Donald camp.

I don't care which committee or organisation it is, if the secretary does not turn up at successive meetings and the others are warned to do what they're told or else...it is unacceptable. Blackmail comes to mind
