Hunterston B power station is holding a series of apprentice information days over the next month, to help local youngsters kick start a new career in the nuclear energy industry.

They have put out an appeal for more women to come forward to take advantage of the apprentice opportunities available at the local power station site.

EDF Energy runs a very successful advanced nuclear apprenticeship scheme, and is holding three information days to give prospective applicants all the information they need.

From studying on the south coast for the first two years to what qualifications are needed and how to apply, the information days will prove invaluable to anyone considering a career with EDF Energy.

The information days take place on Sunday 25 November, Saturday 1 and 8 December at 10-11am, 12-1pm and 2-3pm (three sessions on each day) at the Visitors' Centre, Hunterston B power station, Station director Colin Weir says: "We expect there to be a lot of interest in our apprentice information days and I would encourage people to book up as early as possible.

"In the current climate, an apprenticeship offers a real alternative to going to university. Our scheme is very highly regarded and the sky really is the limit for our apprentices. Several members of EDF Energy's executive team started with the company in this way, so the message is this course could be the start of a truly amazing engineering career.

"Staff at Hunterston B are immensely proud of their station, both locally in offering jobs and, nationally, by producing a large percentage of the nation's low carbon electricity demands. These information sessions will give us a chance to share our enthusiasm with those wishing to apply to join the apprenticeship scheme in 2013.

"While anyone who meets the criteria can apply, we are very keen to encourage females to consider a career in engineering at EDF Energy. Several female members of staff will be on hand to share their experiences of working in the nuclear industry." If you would like to come along to the information day, please call Hunterston B reception on 01294 - 826000. Please note, numbers for each session will be limited to 30. Attendees will also be given the opportunity to book on to a site tour at a later date.
