The recent Rotary Swimarathon took place and raised funds for the End Polio Now campaign.

The event was organised by Hunterston Rotary Club as one of over 300 swimming events arranged worldwide by Rotary International on 23 February.

It has become an annual event with increasing numbers of Rotary clubs becoming involved each year.

This the first year that a club has entered from the West of Scotland district. Polio is now only present in three countries, and Rotary is taking a leading part in trying to rid the world of the disease. For every $ that Rotary raises the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation adds $2 for the campaign.

Entrants are pictured with swimmers at the Vikingar along with members of Hunterston and Largs Rotary Clubs.

The final amount is not yet known but is likely to be in the region of £350 for End Polio Now and £150 for the favoured charity of a participating team. Adding the Gates Foundation contribution, it means that in excess of £1,100 was raised to fight polio by the North Ayrshire swimarathon. Given that it is the first year, the Rotary think that they can adapt the entry criteria to have a wider participation across the four North Ayrshire pools next year.
