‘News’ reporter Calum Corral was the latest to fall victim to the ATM cashline fraud in Largs ... and wasn’t even in the country when it happened!

Calum, who was in Milan on holiday with Claudio Nardini visiting Italian friends, received a phone call from the Clydesdale Bank fraud squad on Sunday.

He said: “I was downloading one of the songs of the holiday - Shakira’s ‘La La La Brazil 2014’ World Cup song from iTunes, on my iPhone when it wouldn’t accept my payment details, and refused to download which I thought was weird. Moments later, I got a phone call from the fraud squad.” Calum was asked for personal banking details over the phone, and responded that he wouldn’t do so until he returned home from holiday as he couldn’t verify the call itself which came up ‘Blocked’ on his iPhone.

Upon returning to Scotland on Monday evening, he noticed there was an attempted transaction to remove £300 from his bank account, but was subsequently immediately returned.

Calum added: “Thankfully I wasn’t aware what had happened so it didn’t spoil my holiday in the slightest. When I phoned the fraud squad, I told them that I had been on holiday. They asked me if I had been in Long Island, New York. I said: ‘No - on the other side of the world in Milan, and I didn’t go anywhere near a bank machine when I was there, I only attempted to download a song from iTunes.” “The bank stated that the illegal transaction was nothing to do with iTunes, and they checked for my last Scottish transaction - which happened to be the HSBC ATM withdrawal machine at Morrison’s in Largs.

“Thankfully I had covered my pin number, as the banks have been advising you to do. And as they didn’t have my pin number details, they were unable to remove the money from my account, and the bank stopped it from happening right away.

“Perhaps the most disappointing thing about it all was that I still can’t download the Shakira tune until I get my new bank card which I have to wait five days for!”
