Some drivers are being tempted “to boldly go” — where they shouldn’t! — at the “spaceman” corner in Largs.

Fears that a serious accident will occur outside the Blue Lagoon restaurant in Main Street have been raised at Largs Communtiy Council.

Main Street Cllr Margaret Wood told the council she had seen a driver, who had come up Main Street, turn right and bump across the pedestrian pavement — where the restaurant’s promotional “spaceman” stands.

The councillor told the recent meeting that a dangerous situation was developing because a large information sign had been taken away from the spot. The position of the sign had been an indication to drivers that they shouldn’t access Stanlane Place from Main Street by driving straight in front of the Blue Lagoon.

Now some drivers seemed to mistakenly think that was one way to access disabled parking opposite McCabe’s Bar — even though a bollard was positioned on the pavement.

Mrs Wood said: “I saw this happening myself — and someone was nearly knocked down. It’s happening on a regular basis. There is going to be a serious accident if the gap is not shut off.” She said the life-sized spaceman in a NASA suit was sometimes positioned on the pavement outside the restaurant and that in itself was an indication to drivers not to proceed through the gap.

Secretary George Douglas told the meeting he had written to council roads engineer Crawford Forsyth about the situation who had been pleased that he had been informed.

Cllr Douglas said: “Mr Forsyth has said engineers will examine the locus to put additional bollards on the footpath to visually demonstrate it’s a no through route.”
