The First World War centenary was marked in Largs by the newly reformed Royal British Legion branch of Largs on the eve of the anniversary of the outbreak of war.

On Sunday August 3, Legion Scotland (Largs branch) planted poppy crosses on the eight local WW1 war gravens in the Haylie Brae Cemetery on Sunday August 3 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great War.

There are only eight First World War graves in the local cemetery, and they are: A J Jamieson, a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery, aged 29, who died on 3 December 1916, Canadian G Dick, aged 27, a sergeant who died on 12 July 1916, J Campbell, aged 34, a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery who died on 23 August 1916, George MacDonald, aged 23, a 2nd lieutenanant serving in the Highland Light Infantry who died on 17 Novmember 1918, R C Davie, Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps who died on 4 February 1919, J C Figgins, 25, seaman who died on 18 September 1918, Thomas Easson, 39, a private with the Royal Scots Fusiliers, who died on 14 December 1915, and P Mackie, 27, a corporal of horse, with the lifeguards, who died on 21 October 1918.

Secretary of Legion Scotland (Largs Branch), Phil Chinery said: “It was a very poignant occasion - we had eight branch members and each planted a poppy cross on the eight graves, and two members of the public also attended to pay their own respects, and that was thanks to the publicity of the event provided by the Largs and Millport Weekly News.

“And at 11am on Sunday morning, I personally popped down to the War Memorial and put one cross at the memorial for all the first world war veterans.” Members of the Largs branch also attended the First World War parade in Glasgow on the day of the anniversary of the outbreak of war - Monday 4 August - and watched the service from the cathedral in the city on the giant tv screen erected at George Square.

Next year, the Largs Legion branch are hoping to mark the 70th anniversary of the cessation of hostilities in the Second World War with other events in the Largs area.
