Facebook went floral this week - as some of the impressive garden displays in the Largs area were praised by locals.

Caroline Le Good Morgan took an excellent photo of the arrangements, and said: “I think the Largs council gardeners, or beautification team, have done a fabulous job- here’s a view looking back towards the side of St John’s and Dunn Memorial hall with the gorgeous flower bed in front of Sandrigham.” Another picture of the new display at Hyndman Green also received some admiring comments from readers.

Jan Lowry said we should count ourselves lucky: “The flowers are lovely .. here in Luton now lots of flower beds are being sown as wild flower meadows, no maintenance so no jobs for those who used to plant them out.” Marjory Scollin Brown pointed out: “You’re just missing the disabled drivers driving over the pavement trying to get to the parking spaces.” Michelle Imisson said it was about time that council workers received some praise for the nice looking flower displays.

Bernie McCaig added: “I miss the tree and all the parking beside it - you could get about 15 cars there.” But there was no pleasing Jane Fisher who remarked: “I prefer the old cherry tree that used to be there!” And our nostalgic photos are proving as popular as ever, with a magnificent colour photo of the Brisbane Queen at her crowning ceremony in glorious technicolour from many moons ago, provided by local photographer Grahame Ross.

Gail Reynolds was presented with the crown, Wendy Watt is pictured on left, and Barbara Marr crowning.

Fiona Godfrey said: “That is a great picture, loving the outfits and hats.” Wendy Watt commented: “Quite honestly these dresses, hats and bag where made by hand. The work this woman put in and it was all voluntary was much appreciated by us all. She is no longer here anymore, Vi Friel was a very Special lady.” David Hill joked about the maids of honour costume: “Terrible thing, the toothache!” Wendy replied: “That was the first thing we thought when we saw the hats!” And Elaine Paterson likes the profile picture on our Facebook site of the St Columba’s Parish Church clockface: “I love the fact you have pic of the clock stuck at 12 on your main pic. When is it going to be fixed? I miss hearing it chime.” Keep in touch with the Largs News at www.facebook.com/largsandmillportnews which now has 6100 followers.
