Largs Rock Choir, which started exactly one year ago, is getting ready for another show stopping year and taking on more classic and contemporary songs. The choir has been on a fantastic journey since it opened its doors to members in September 2013 and continues to grow.

As well as learning to sing well known, feel-good songs, Rock Choir Leader Jennifer Sim explains that the choir is more than just a chance to sing together, it’s also a great way to meet new people. She said: “A number of the members joined to make new friends and increase their social life and increase their social life.” The past twelve months have been very busy for the choir with events and performances, most of which raise money for local charities. Members of Largs Rock Choir have performed at a range of community events including a performance to raise money for ‘HappyDayz’ Charity in Dunoon and at the Lochwinnoch Arts Festival raising money for SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilspey).

Larger performances took place at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh where 700 Rock Choir members performed a surprise flashmob at half-time during the Scotland vs Japan match. In June this year ‘The Choir That Rocks’ Summer Concert was a sell-out at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall with 500 members singing together to support the Chest Heart And Stroke Charity raising over £1,500.

Jennifer helped organise a trip for members to Abbey Road Studios in London this year. “This was the most fantastic experience and everyone who came along made the most of their time in London. Recording at the world famous studios was a once in a lifetime opportunity.” The trip also raised over £800 for McMillan Cancer Care.

Rock Choir also took part in some filming for the BBC 3 musical drama ‘Glasgow Girls’. “It was a real honour to be asked to take part in this film and although the producers only needed a very small choir for 2 scenes, the members were given the opportunity to become ‘extra’s on set which was very exciting for everyone!” To mark a successful first year, Jennifer is inviting people of Largs to a Rock Choir Workshop on Sunday 7th September 2-4 pm at St Columba’s Scottish Episcopal Church Hall (left of the Church building), Aubery Crescent, Largs. People can learn a fee-good song, enjoy tea or coffee and cake and everyone will receive a very warm welcome. People are advised to book your place at the session in advance on-line via the website www.rockchoir.com or telephone 01252 714276.

Rock Choir is the UK’s largest contemporary choir, with more than 16,000 members in over 300 local communities.
